about

With a focused and energetic style, Brazilian instrumental quintet The Big Odd releases its homonymous debut album on November 8 – a sonic mix of post-rock, progressive music and jazz that places high value on freedom, creativity, and self-expression.

Experimenting with rhythms, timbres, and narrative soundscapes, guitarists Gabriel Perpétuo and Vicente França, drummer Tiago Eiras, bassist Antônio Vinícius Silva and woodwind player Guilherme Peluci give each track its own particular feel and ambience, all the while retaining the band’s distinctive sound.

Nine guest musicians were invited to collaborate in specific songs: Joana Queiroz, Felipe José, Rafa Nunes, PC Guimarães, Bernardo Bauer, Paulo Fróis, José Paulo Ribeiro, Wagner Souza and Luana Aires. Together, they helped create a deeply engaging polyphonic experience that celebrates singularity and dissent in independent art.

The album features 10 tracks and is the result of a 3-year collaboration that began with the arrangement of the songs at Camará Studio, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. They were later recorded at Ilha do Corvo Studio with the production of Leonardo Marques. Finishing touches and most of the collaboration process with guest musicians took place remotely during the first months of the 2020 pandemic, making the album a genuine multistage production.

Having played together for over a decade, the members of The Big Odd collaborated with important Brazilian artists such as João Donato, Uakti’s Décio Ramos, Curumim, and Cidadão Instigado’s Fernando Catatau. During this period, the band performed in many Brazilian festivals, in the US and in China.

The Big Odd’s album project is sponsored by Hotel Ouro Minas through the Belo Horizonte Culture City Fund.
